Webkit got in sync with Safari 3

It seems that Webkit is nearly Safari 3 now, or even ahead of Safari 3 beta. Moreover it is localized, see the German menus. The current Safari version 3.0.2 (522.12):

Here is the latest Webkit from 31/08/07, shown as 3.0.3:

Strangely though the Cmd-F search is still the old non-modal popup mode, not the one we know from Safari 3.

Windchill Factor - felt speed of Gecko vs. Safari

In his keynote Steve Jobs announced the Safari 3 beta and called it the fasted browser on earth. As a user of Camino,  (after having dropped Safari 2 because of incompatibilities last year) I was surprised to feel how smooth Safari 3 is compared to the Gecko engine. Here are two video proofs of the experience:[quicktime width="480" height="380"]http://sschimanski.googlepages.com/Safari.mov[/quicktime][quicktime width="480" height="380"]http://sschimanski.googlepages.com/Gecko.mov[/quicktime] Gecko has no pixel-wise scrolling it seems. Moreover the loading times seem to be much faster in Safari (in both cases the pages were in cache, so no influence of download time).

Thumbnail tabs

A great extension for Firefox: Tab Sidebar. It uses the Canvas HTML element of Gecko to draw the thumbnails without any noticeable delay.

It’s nearly as good as Stand, a plugin for Safari, visible on the right. After getting used to the tabs on the left instead at the top, selecting the right tab visually is so much easier, and even more much more suitable for wide screen displays.
