A great extension for Firefox: Tab Sidebar. It uses the Canvas HTML element of Gecko to draw the thumbnails without any noticeable delay.
It’s nearly as good as Stand, a plugin for Safari, visible on the right. After getting used to the tabs on the left instead at the top, selecting the right tab visually is so much easier, and even more much more suitable for wide screen displays.
Nachdem Debian letztens die Umbenennung von Thunderbird und Firefox angekündigt hat, tat sich die Frage auf, ob Ubuntu nachzieht. Nicht überraschend will Ubuntu aber möglichst bei den “Original”-Namen der beiden Mozilla-Projekte bleiben. Also zeigt sich zumindest dort ein wenig mehr Flexibilität, Kompromissbereitschaft und Pragmatismus. Die einen nennen es konsequent, die anderen fundamentalistisch, auch wenn Mark Shuttleworth es nicht so bezeichnen möchte, so sind es doch zwei Begriffe für die selbe Sache.
So nachvollziehbar die Grundsätze der Freien-Software-Bewegung doch sind, manche Entscheidungen und Entwicklungen müssen auf “Außenstehende” schon arg befremdend wirken. Firefox gilt als freie Software, und dann bekommen sich die Debian-Leute mit den Firefox-Entwicklern in die Haare. Ab sofort heißt Firefox jetzt IceWeasel und Thunderbird wird zu IceDove in Debian (und evtl. auch in Ubuntu). Und scheinbar alles, weil die Debian-Maintainer die Logos (die geschützt und damit nicht frei sind) aus Firefox entfernen wollten. Dies mögen die Firefox-Entwickler nun aber nicht und verbieten Debian die Benutzung des Namens “Firefox”. Bei haargenauer Auslegung aller Grundsätze freier Software und der Markeninteressen der Mozilla-Foundation wohl ein kaum vermeidbarer Schritt, wenn er auch in der Öffentlichkeit sicher nur als kurios und “verrückt” betitelt werden wird.
For quite some time I was looking for a solution to embed the Gecko engine (which is used in Firefox to render the HTML pages) into Emacs buffers, more or less like it is possible with the w3m mode. But of course the latter is only text mode while Gecko would be graphics and therefore (maybe) more complicated. Anyway, somebody now did something in the other direction: an chrome implementation of an Emacs like user interface for Firefox 
Look here. It’s called Conkeror (no idea why. Konqueror is the KDE browser which existed long before this project was started) and replaces the Firefox GUI:
Now it only has to work on my machine. Not that I want to use it so eagerly, but it looks cool It is the same guy btw. who wrote ratpoison, a minimalistic Emacs like or GNU screen like window manager for X-Windows.
to restore contents of web forms when using the “back” button?! There is nothing more annoying than typing a longer text in a web application, then hitting a link by accident and the whole text is gone. Going back to the previous page of course does not help to get the text back. Had that so many times already… wondering if there is an extension, option, magic trick for that… but it seems it’s not, at least some time ago there wasn’t.
